Allergen Chopping Boards

Allergen chopping boards are one of the many types of colour-coded culinary equipment in both professional and domestic kitchens. The purpose of the colour-coding system is to prevent cross-contamination between potentially harmful allergens

Our chopping boards have a machined finish, smooth to the touch but sporting visible texture, this machined finish helps to increase the grip on the surface of the chopping board, reducing the likelihood that you will slip while using it.

While allergen boards can be used for all types of ingredients and allergens, it still poses a risk of cross-contamination. It’s important to wash your board after each use and use alongside coloured chopping boards.

What are the major allergens?

It is important to note there are several allergens, technically every ingredient in existence could cause an allergic reaction. However, some are more common than others. These are the major fourteen allergens:

Are allergen chopping boards a legal requirement?

Allergen chopping boards are not a legal requirement, but many opt to use purple boards for allergens and other coloured boards for specific types of food or ingredients.

How should I store them?

You should clean each board after use and store them away from each if possible. It’s best to have a stand where the chopping boards are together but not quite touching, and store them away from normal boards and allergens.

How should they be maintained?

You must wash your boards between allergens. Warp-proof chopping boards can go in the dishwasher, or you can wash them with warm soapy water and a scratch-resistant cleaner if necessary.

Why are they purple?

Purple has become the universal colour for major allergens simply because other colours were already in use for other types of food and ingredients.
